sugar 1kg (5cups/2.2lb)
water 1l (4 cups/2.2lb)

butter 150g (2/3cup)
oil 100ml (1/2cup)
filo pastry 500g (1.1lb)

Prepare the syrup by combining 1kg sugar, 1l water, and juice of 1 lemon in a pot and bring to a boil. Let it simmer until slightly thickened.

In a separate bowl, mix the ground walnuts with 4tbsp sugar.

Melt 150g butter and 100ml oil together.

Layer the filo pastry in a baking dish, brushing each layer with the butter and oil mixture.

Spread the walnut mixture over the layered pastry.

Continue layering more filo pastry, brushing with the butter and oil mixture, until all ingredients are used.

Cut the baklava into diamond shapes before baking.

Bake in a preheated oven until golden brown.

Once baked, pour the syrup over the hot baklava and let it soak.
