Baklava is a traditional dessert originating from the Ottoman Empire, with deep roots in Balkan and Middle Eastern cuisines. This rich pastry, made of layers of phyllo dough filled with nuts and sweetened with syrup, is often served during celebrations and special occasions. Today, baklava is enjoyed worldwide, with regional variations in ingredients and preparation methods.

Ingredients

  • phyllo dough
  • walnuts
  • pistachios
  • butter
  • sugar
  • water
  • honey
  • cinnamon
  • lemon juice
  • vanilla extract
  • salt
  • cloves

Instructions

  1. 1Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. 2Grease a baking dish with melted butter.
  3. 3Layer sheets of phyllo dough in the dish, brushing each layer with melted butter.
  4. 4Chop walnuts and pistachios finely and mix with sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
  5. 5Spread a layer of the nut mixture over the phyllo dough.
  6. 6Continue layering phyllo and nut mixture until all ingredients are used, finishing with phyllo on top.
  7. 7Cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes using a sharp knife.
  8. 8Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes until golden brown.
  9. 9While baklava is baking, combine water, sugar, honey, lemon juice, and vanilla in a saucepan.
  10. 10Bring the syrup mixture to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes.
  11. 11Remove baklava from the oven and immediately pour the hot syrup over it.
  12. 12Allow baklava to cool completely before serving.
  13. 13Garnish with additional chopped nuts if desired.
