While they have roots in early settler cooking, toutons have evolved into a comfort food, cherished by locals and visitors alike, and are sometimes filled or topped with various ingredients.

In a bowl, combine 2 eggs, 1/4 cup sugar, and 6 tablespoons of cooking oil.
Add 3 cups of lukewarm water to the mixture and test the temperature on your wrist.
In a measuring cup, measure 4 cups of flour and add 2 1/2 teaspoons of quick rise yeast, whisking to combine.
Add the yeast mixture to the egg mixture and mix with a wooden spoon until there are no lumps.
In another bowl, measure another 4 cups of flour and add 2 teaspoons of salt, whisking to combine.
Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet mixture, kneading until a nice ball forms.
Set the dough aside to rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
Punch down the dough and scrape it out onto a floured surface.
Shape the dough into an oval and mark it with a pizza cutter to guide cutting.
Cut the dough into pieces and shape them into balls, pressing out the air.
Transfer the shaped dough to a bread pan, covering with a towel to prevent drying out.
Let the dough rise again until it reaches the top of the pan, about 30 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Once risen, bake the dough in the oven for about 30 minutes, tapping the top to check for a hollow sound.
For the toutons, roll out the dough to a thickness of about 1/2 inch.
Use a cookie cutter to cut out circles from the rolled dough.
Place the cut-out dough on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
