EASY New York Bagels at home - By an actual New Yorker
Recipe Information
New York Bagels
Pour half a cup of warm water into a separate container and combine it with the sugar and yeast.
Let the yeast mixture sit for about 5 minutes to reactivate.
In a mixing bowl, add the flour and then the salt, mixing slowly to combine.
Add the yeast, sugar, and water mixture to the flour and mix for 3 minutes.
Remove the mixing attachment and switch to the kneading attachment.
Knead the dough for about 10 minutes, adding pinches of flour until the dough stops taking more flour.
Transfer the dough to a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp dish towel, and let it rise for 1 hour.
After 1 hour, punch the dough to remove air and let it sit for another 10 minutes.
Put a pot of water on to boil.
Turn the risen dough out onto a cutting board and cut it into 8 equal pieces.
Roll each piece into a tight ball using your hands.
Dip your thumb in flour and poke a hole through the center of each ball, stretching it out to about a third of the diameter of the finished bagel.
Cover the bagels with a towel and let them rest for another 10 minutes.
Preheat the oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit.
Carefully place the bagels in the simmering water, ugly side up, cooking for 1 minute on each side.
Remove the bagels from the water and add any desired toppings.
Place the bagels on a lightly oiled cookie sheet and bake in the oven for 20 minutes.
