Cultural Context
Baklawa, a sweet pastry of layered phyllo dough filled with nuts and drenched in syrup, is believed to have originated in the Ottoman Empire. It holds a special place in Middle Eastern celebrations, often served during holidays and special occasions. Today, baklawa has gained popularity worldwide, with various regional adaptations featuring different nuts and flavorings.

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
Layer sheets of phyllo dough in a greased baking dish, brushing each layer with melted butter.
Chop the nuts and mix with sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla extract.
Spread a layer of the nut mixture over the phyllo layers.
Continue layering phyllo and nut mixture until all ingredients are used, finishing with phyllo on top.
Cut the layered pastry into diamond or square shapes before baking.
Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown, about 30-40 minutes.
While the baklawa bakes, prepare the syrup by combining water, sugar, honey, and lemon juice in a saucepan.
Bring the syrup to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes.
Remove the baklawa from the oven and immediately pour the hot syrup over it.
Let the baklawa cool completely before serving.
