Traditionally served at celebrations and gatherings, it has become popular worldwide, with many variations.

Separate the egg yolks from the egg whites by tapping the egg on the side of a bowl and cracking it open, then transfer the yolk to a separate bowl.
Add 3/4 cup of white sugar to the egg yolks and whisk until blended.
Gradually add 2/3 cup of milk to the egg yolk and sugar mixture, whisking continuously until well incorporated.
Transfer the mixture to a skillet and cook over medium heat, stirring continuously until it bubbles (about 3-4 minutes). Cook for an additional 1 minute after bubbling.
Transfer the cooked mixture to a bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 1 hour to cool completely.
In a separate bowl, add 1 1/4 cups of heavy whipping cream and 1 tbsp of vanilla extract, then beat until stiff peaks form (about 2 minutes).
Once the custard is cooled, add the mascarpone cheese and mix until well blended.
Fold in 1/4 of the whipped cream into the mascarpone and custard mixture until no white or yellow streaks remain. Repeat with another 1/4 of the whipped cream.
In a shallow dish, combine 1/2 cup of coffee and 2 tbsp of dark rum, stirring to mix.
Dip the lady fingers quickly into the coffee mixture (about 2 seconds each) and layer them in a 9x9 inch pan.
Spread half of the tiramisu custard over the first layer of lady fingers, ensuring there are no air pockets.
Add a second layer of lady fingers, pushing them down gently into the custard. Use 28 lady fingers instead of the original 24 if needed.
Spread the remaining custard over the second layer of lady fingers, covering them completely.
Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight or for up to 8 hours.
After chilling, remove the plastic wrap and cut into slices using a serrated knife.
Sprinkle cocoa powder over the top of each slice using a small sieve.
