Originating from Guyana, Salara is a beloved sweet bread filled with grated coconut, often enjoyed during festive occasions and family gatherings. This treat reflects the country's diverse culinary heritage, combining influences from Indigenous, African, and East Indian cuisines. Today, Salara is cherished not only in Guyana but also among the diaspora, symbolizing home and tradition in every bite.

Sift 4 cups of flour into a mixing bowl to avoid lumps.
Add 2 tablespoons of yeast into 2.5 cups of warm milk and stir, then add 1 cup of sugar to activate the yeast.
Add 1 tablespoon of salt and 2 sticks of butter to the dry ingredients.
Mix the yeast mixture into the flour slowly, aiming for a soft dough.
Knead the dough until smooth, then leave it in the bowl to rise, covered, until doubled in size.
Prepare the filling by mixing 1 grated coconut with 1 bowl of white sugar, 0.5 tablespoon of nutmeg, 0.5 tablespoon of clove powder, 0.5 tablespoon of cinnamon powder, and 1 tablespoon of mixed essence, along with red food coloring to achieve desired color.
Once the dough has risen, roll it out and spread the coconut filling evenly over it.
Roll the dough tightly into a log and pinch the edges to seal.
Place the log in a greased baking pan and cover to let it rise again for about an hour.
Preheat the oven and bake the bread for approximately 20 minutes or until golden brown.
