Originating from Guyana, Salara is a beloved sweet bread filled with grated coconut, often enjoyed during festive occasions and family gatherings. This treat reflects the country's diverse culinary heritage, combining influences from Indigenous, African, and East Indian cuisines. Today, Salara is cherished not only in Guyana but also among the diaspora, symbolizing home and tradition in every bite.

Mix 1 tablespoon of sugar with dry instant yeast and set aside for 10 minutes to rise.
Add salt and melted butter to the yeast mixture and mix well with clean hands.
Once the yeast has risen, mix in flour to form a soft, smooth dough.
Set the dough aside to rise for 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Prepare the filling by mixing freshly grated coconut with sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, and vanilla extract.
Add red food coloring to the coconut mixture gradually until the desired color is achieved.
Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into two halves.
Roll out one half of the dough as thin as possible into a square shape.
Spread the coconut filling evenly over the rolled-out dough, leaving about 1/4 inch from the edges.
Roll the dough tightly to form a log, pinching the sides to seal.
Place the rolled dough into a baking pan and repeat with the second half of the dough.
Allow the rolls to rise until doubled in size.
Preheat the oven to 350°F (gas mark 4).
Bake the rolls for 30 to 45 minutes until golden brown.
Remove the rolls from the oven and brush with melted butter.
Let the rolls cool before slicing.
