1 package puff pastry (about 500g)
2 cups milk
1 cup heavy cream
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup cornstarch
4 large egg yolks
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 tsp salt

Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).

Roll out the puff pastry on a floured surface and cut it into two equal rectangles.

Place the pastry rectangles on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and prick them with a fork to prevent puffing.

Bake the pastry in the preheated oven for about 15-20 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from the oven and let cool.

In a saucepan, combine the milk, heavy cream, and half of the granulated sugar. Heat over medium heat until just boiling.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg yolks, cornstarch, remaining sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until smooth.

Once the milk mixture is boiling, slowly pour it into the egg mixture while whisking continuously to temper the eggs.

Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until it thickens and bubbles.

Remove from heat and let the cream cool slightly before spreading it over one of the baked pastry rectangles.

Top with the second pastry rectangle and refrigerate for at least 2 hours to set.

Before serving, dust the top with powdered sugar and cut into squares.
