Its creamy texture and sweet flavor make it a comforting treat, reflecting the Dutch affinity for rich, dairy-based desserts. Today, variations abound, with many adding fresh fruits or chocolate to enhance its appeal, making it a versatile favorite in both traditional and modern Dutch cuisine.

Agar-agar is a plant-based alternative to gelatin.
Add 1 tablespoon of unflavored gelatin to 50 milliliters of milk and let it sit until it absorbs the milk.
In a bowl, whisk together 2 egg yolks and 100 grams of sugar until pale yellow and well combined.
Mix in 150 milliliters of milk into the egg yolk and sugar mixture until incorporated.
In a small saucepan, combine the remaining 100 milliliters of milk and the egg mixture, stirring continuously over low heat until it reaches a slow boil.
Once it starts boiling, let it boil for 30 seconds while stirring with a wooden spoon.
Strain the mixture to remove any cooked egg pieces.
Allow the mixture to cool to 130 degrees Fahrenheit (55 degrees Celsius) before adding the bloomed gelatin, stirring thoroughly to dissolve it completely.
Pour the mixture into a bowl through a strainer to catch any lumps of gelatin.
Cool the mixture to 75 degrees Fahrenheit (24 degrees Celsius) before whipping the heavy cream and egg whites together.
Once the mixture is at 75 degrees, whip the heavy cream and egg whites until soft peaks form, then fold them into the cooled mixture.
