In a bowl, combine all-purpose flour and a little bit of salt.
Add very cold unsalted butter and Crisco or vegetable shortening to the flour.
Using the tips of your fingers, gently rub the butter and shortening into the flour until the mixture is sandy and lumpy.
Stream in ice water a little at a time, mixing gently with your fingertips until no dry flour remains.
Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and compact it, then refrigerate for about 20 minutes.
In a bowl, combine currants, sugar, ground cinnamon, freshly grated nutmeg, vanilla extract, and a little sprinkling of salt.
Add softened butter to the filling mixture and mash everything together until well combined with no lumps.
Divide the chilled dough into two pieces and flour your surface.
Roll out one piece of dough into a rectangular shape, adding flour as needed to prevent sticking.
Spread half of the filling evenly over the rolled-out dough.
Starting from one side, roll the dough tightly into a roll and tuck in the edges to seal.
Press down slightly on the rolled dough to thin it out a bit.
Place the currants roll on a baking dish lined with parchment paper.
Brush the top with whole milk or an egg wash for a golden color.
Sprinkle turbinado sugar on top for a crunchy texture.
Score the top of the roll lightly with a knife in a diagonal motion.
