Start with currants, and mix them with sugar, fresh nutmeg, and vanilla extract. Set aside.
In a bowl, combine all-purpose flour, yeast, and sugar. Mix well.
Gradually add milk to the flour mixture, a little at a time, until it forms a medium dough.
Knead the dough until it is smooth, then cover with plastic wrap and let it rest for 15 minutes.
Divide the dough into 11 balls, each about three inches in size.
Roll out each ball into a round about a quarter of an inch thick.
Spread soft butter on the first round, then layer the next round on top. Repeat until all rounds are stacked.
Press down on the final layer and wrap the stack in plastic wrap. Freeze for 20-30 minutes until firm.
After freezing, lightly flour the work surface and roll the dough into a large rectangle, about a quarter of an inch thick.
Sprinkle the currant mixture evenly over the rectangle. Add more currants if desired.
Starting from the long side, roll the dough tightly into a log, tucking in the ends as you go.
If the log is too long, divide it in half to fit your baking tray.
Place the log on a tray and bake at 400°F for 40 minutes until golden brown.
Let it cool on a wire rack to prevent sogginess, then slice at an angle to serve.
