Rinse 300 g of red lentils under cold water.

2

Add 900 mL of water to the lentils along with 1 teaspoon of salt and 1 teaspoon of turmeric.

3

Bring the mixture to a boil, which takes about 5 minutes.

4

Once boiling, set a timer for 10 minutes to cook the lentils.

5

While the lentils are cooking, chop 2 medium onions.

6

After 10 minutes, check the lentils; they should be soft and mushy.

In a hot pan, add 2 tablespoons of ghee (or a teaspoon of oil to prevent burning).

9

Add 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds to the ghee and let them sizzle.

10

Add the chopped garlic and then the onions to the pan; sauté for 6-7 minutes until the onions are golden brown.

11

Chop 1 tomato and add it to the pan along with 1/2 a red chili; cook for 5 minutes until the tomatoes soften.

12

Add a handful of chopped fresh cilantro to the mixture before finishing.
