Garlic Knots

Cultural Context

Garlic knots originated in Italian-American communities, particularly in New York City, as a way to use leftover pizza dough. These delightful bites are often served as a side dish in pizzerias and Italian restaurants, celebrating the flavors of garlic and herbs. Today, garlic knots have gained popularity beyond Italian cuisine, appearing on menus worldwide as a beloved snack or appetizer.

1

Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).

2

In a large bowl, add 1 cup of bread flour or all-purpose flour.

3

Add 1 packet (2 and 1/4 teaspoons) of instant yeast, 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of granulated sugar, 3/4 teaspoon of salt, and 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder. Mix together until combined.

4

Add 3/4 cup of warm water (between 105 and 115 degrees Fahrenheit) and 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil. Stir until combined.

5

Gradually add 1 to 1 and 1/3 cups of more flour until the mixture forms a cohesive ball that is slightly tacky but not sticky.

6

Lightly oil a separate bowl and place the dough ball inside, rolling it to coat with olive oil. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes until doubled in size.

7

Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and break it into about 9 pieces.

8

Form the dough into a log and cut it into pieces slightly larger than 1 and 1/2 inches wide. Roll each piece into an 8-inch long rope and tie into a knot.

9

Place the knots on a parchment paper lined baking sheet and optionally brush with olive oil.

10

Let the knots rise for another 5 minutes on top of the preheated oven.

11

Bake in the preheated oven for about 13 minutes until lightly golden brown.

12

In a small saucepan, add 4 tablespoons of salted butter and 3 cloves of minced garlic. Heat over medium until the butter is melted and garlic is fragrant.

13

Remove from heat and stir in 1 heaping tablespoon of minced fresh basil. Set aside until garlic knots are done baking.

14

Let the garlic knots cool for 3 to 5 minutes, then brush generously with the garlic butter topping.
