Garlic Knots

Cultural Context

Garlic knots originated in Italian-American communities, particularly in New York City, as a way to use leftover pizza dough. These delightful bites are often served as a side dish in pizzerias and Italian restaurants, celebrating the flavors of garlic and herbs. Today, garlic knots have gained popularity beyond Italian cuisine, appearing on menus worldwide as a beloved snack or appetizer.

1

Prepare the garlic and parmesan butter by mixing loads of parmesan with minced garlic and olive oil.

2

Use semolina to dust the surface and roll out the leftover pizza dough into a rectangle about half a centimeter thick.

3

Coat the rolled-out dough with the garlic parmesan butter mixture generously.

4

Cut the dough down the middle into strips using a pizza cutter.

5

Tie each strip into a knot and place them in a skillet.

6

Add grated mozzarella cheese on top of the knots.

7

Tear basil leaves and hide them underneath some of the knots to prevent burning.

8

Preheat the Ooni Koda 2 Pro pizza oven to about 250°C.

9

Bake the garlic knots in the oven for about 15 minutes until the dough has risen and the cheese is bubbling.

10

After 10 minutes, check the knots to see if they are rising nicely and bubbling, then continue baking for another 5 minutes.

11

Once done, finish with a sprinkle of parmesan cheese on top before serving.

12

Serve with homemade tomato sauce for dipping.
