Fried Calamari

1 lb calamari, cleaned and sliced into rings
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp black pepper
1 tsp salt
Vegetable oil for frying
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1 shallot, minced
1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped
1 plum tomato, diced
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper (optional)

Clean the calamari by turning it inside out and removing the insides.

Cut the calamari into half-inch rings.

Dry the calamari with a little water.
