They quickly became a beloved dessert, known for their rich, chocolatey flavor and chewy texture. Traditionally served at picnics and gatherings, brownies have evolved into countless variations, including those with nuts, frosting, or even swirls of cream cheese. Today, they are a staple in American baking, cherished for their simplicity and indulgence.

Lightly grease a 9x9-inch baking pan with butter, line with parchment paper leaving overhang on all sides, and grease the parchment paper with butter.
Cut unsalted butter into small cubes and place in a heat-safe bowl. Roughly chop dark chocolate and add to the bowl along with cooking oil.
Fill a small saucepan about a quarter full with hot water, then place the bowl over the saucepan, ensuring the bowl does not touch the water. Melt butter and chocolate over low heat, stirring occasionally until well combined, then remove from heat and let cool to room temperature.
In a large bowl, add eggs, salt, sugar, and vanilla extract. Beat at medium speed until thick (about 9-10 minutes).
With the mixer on, pour in the slightly cooled butter and chocolate mixture and blend until smooth.
Add in the coffee mixture.
Sift in the all-purpose flour and cocoa powder, and gently fold until just combined.
Fold in the chocolate chips.
Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and smooth the top with a spatula.
Bake in the preheated oven at 320°F (160°C) for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.
After 20 minutes of baking, take the brownies out of the oven and hit the pan on your kitchen counter to crack the top, then return to the oven for another 10 minutes.
Allow to cool on a cooling rack, using the parchment paper to lift the brownies out of the pan. Cool completely before slicing.
