Fudgy Brownies

Cultural Context

Fudgy brownies originated in the United States in the late 19th century, likely as a result of a recipe mishap. They quickly became a beloved dessert, known for their rich, chocolatey flavor and chewy texture. Traditionally served at picnics and gatherings, brownies have evolved into countless variations, including those with nuts, frosting, or even swirls of cream cheese. Today, they are a staple in American baking, cherished for their simplicity and indulgence.

chocolate chips

🥗Healthier: dark chocolate

💰Cheaper: chocolate chunks

Dark chocolate has less sugar and is richer in flavor.

1

Heat a pan over medium heat and add 1/2 cup of vegetable oil.

2

Add 3/4 cup (6 ounces) of semi-sweet chocolate chips to the oil.

3

Whisk the chocolate chips and oil together over medium heat until melted, keeping the heat low to avoid burning.

4

Once the chocolate chips are about halfway melted, turn off the heat and let the residual heat melt the rest of the chocolate.

5

Set the melted chocolate and oil mixture aside to cool for about 10 minutes until it reaches room temperature.

6

In a large bowl, crack 3 large eggs and whisk them together to break up the yolks.

7

Add 3/4 cup of white granulated sugar, 1/4 cup of packed light brown sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon of instant coffee to the eggs and whisk until mixed.

8

Add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract and mix well until the sugars are dissolved.

9

Once the chocolate mixture is cool, add it to the egg and sugar mixture and mix until combined.

10

Incorporate 3/4 cup of plain all-purpose flour and 1/4 teaspoon of salt into the mixture, mixing until smooth with no streaks or lumps of flour remaining.

11

Pour the brownie batter into an 8 inch by 8 inch glass baking dish (or metal dish).

12

Bake in a preheated oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 32 to 35 minutes.

13

Check for doneness by looking for cracks around the outside and inserting a toothpick off-center; it should come out with a little bit of batter still on it.

14

Let the brownies cool to room temperature before serving.
