Mash the black beans in a bowl with a fork until mostly smooth but still textured.

Heat a pan over medium heat and coat it with an even layer of oil, water, or vegetable broth.

Add diced onions, mushrooms, and bell pepper to the pan and sauté over medium to medium-low heat for about 5 minutes until tender and translucent.

Add soy sauce and steak sauce to the sautéed vegetables and continue to sauté until they release more liquid and caramelize.

Combine the sautéed vegetables with the mashed black beans in the bowl.

Add onion powder, garlic powder, smoked paprika, and ground cumin to the mixture and mix well until combined.

Optionally, for a smoother texture, blend half of the mixture in a food processor and then mix it back in.

Line a baking pan with parchment paper and coat it with cooking oil.

Use a 1/3 cup measurer to portion out the black bean burger mixture into patties on the parchment paper, smoothing them out with the base of the measurer.

Preheat the oven to 375°F and bake the patties for 35 to 40 minutes, flipping them halfway through.

Once done, the patties should have a deep brown color and hold together easily.

Assemble the burgers by spreading mustard on the bottom bun, adding a patty, a layer of barbecue sauce, a second patty, and topping with ketchup.
