Frikkadelle, or South African meatballs, have roots in the diverse culinary traditions of the country, influenced by Dutch, Malay, and indigenous cuisines. Traditionally served with a rich tomato sauce, these meatballs are a staple at family gatherings and celebrations, showcasing the communal spirit of South African dining. Today, variations exist across the globe, with many adding unique spices or serving them with different sauces, reflecting local tastes.

Mix beef mince, lamb mince, grated onion, and garlic in a large bowl until combined.
Add bread, eggs, milk, dried thyme, salt, cloves, allspice, and coriander to the mixture.
Form the mixture into large balls.
Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat until shimmering.
Add the meatballs to the skillet in batches, cooking until browned on all sides.
Remove the meatballs and set aside on a plate.
In the same skillet, add pan drippings, flour, onion powder, and dried thyme to make the gravy.
Add enough milk until you've reached your desired consistency for the gravy.
Serve the meatballs with creamy mashed potatoes and garden peas.
