Jamaican Beef Patty with Plantain

The Jamaican beef patty is a beloved street food, originating from the island's rich culinary heritage. It reflects the fusion of African, Spanish, and British influences, showcasing the use of spices and flavors that are characteristic of Caribbean cooking. Traditionally enjoyed as a quick snack or meal, the beef patty has gained popularity beyond Jamaica, inspiring variations worldwide. Paired with fried plantains, this dish embodies the vibrant and diverse flavors of Jamaican cuisine.

Peel the plantains and cut both ends off, then slice down the back and cut in half.
Boil the plantains in a pot of heated water for about 10 minutes until tender but not completely soft.
Use a fork to peel the plantains while they are still hot, then chill them in the refrigerator for 15 minutes.
Mash the boiled plantains using a small Pilon until smooth.
Add 3/4 cup of all-purpose flour, 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder, and 1 teaspoon of salt to the mashed plantains.
Add about 1/4 cup of water and knead into a round ball of dough, ensuring it is not too sticky.
Cut the dough into six equal pieces.
Use cling wrap to roll out each piece of dough, leaving space on all sides.
Add a small amount of ground beef and sprinkle with cheese (half mozzarella and half gouda) to each rolled-out dough piece.
Fold the dough over and gently press the edges together, using a fork to seal them.
Heat about 1 1/2 to 2 cups of canola oil in a frying pan for deep frying.
Fry the patties on both sides until golden brown, approximately 5 to 7 minutes total, watching closely to avoid burning.
Remove the patties from the oil and let them drain on paper towels.
