Slice the beef fillet into pieces.

Heat butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
Add sliced onions and cook for 1-2 minutes.
Add sliced mushrooms and cook until softened.
Remove onions and mushrooms from the skillet and set aside.
Add beef to the skillet and sprinkle with paprika, stirring to coat.
Cook the beef until browned, adding more butter or oil if necessary.
Return the cooked onions and mushrooms to the skillet with the beef.
Add tomato puree and heavy cream, mixing well.
Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
Serve the beef stroganoff over mashed potatoes.
