Tomato Pappu

1 cup Toor dal
500 grams Tomatoes (chopped)
90 grams Onions (finely chopped)
12 Curry Leaves
1 teaspoon Cumin seeds
3/4 teaspoon Mustard seeds
8 Garlic (crushed) flakes
4 Green Chillies (slit into half & seeded)
1 teaspoon Red Chilli Powder
4 whole Red Chillies
1 teaspoon Turmeric powder
1/4 cup Clarified Butter
Salt to taste

Put the Toor dal in a pressure cooker and cook until soft.

Mash the cooked lentils and keep aside.

In a pan, heat the clarified butter and add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Allow them to crackle.

Add the crushed garlic, curry leaves, and sauté until golden brown.

Add the finely chopped onions and fry until transparent.

Add the chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, green chillies, and salt. Sauté until the tomatoes are soft.

If necessary, add a little water to adjust the consistency.

Finally, add the mashed dal to the pan and mix well. Simmer on low heat until heated through.
