Meringue has its roots in Europe, with Luxembourg being known for its delicate and airy versions. Traditionally enjoyed during festive occasions, meringues symbolize celebration and sweetness. Today, they are popular worldwide, often used as toppings for desserts or enjoyed on their own.
Start with 3 egg whites in a clean mixer bowl.
Turn the mixer on high and beat the egg whites until stiff peaks form.
Preheat the oven to 425°F.
Slowly add 1/4 cup of sugar and a little bit of vanilla extract while the mixer is still on high.
Scrape the sides of the bowl and beat for another minute to incorporate all the sugar.
Keep in mind that humidity can affect the meringue; it's harder to get it right on rainy days.
Use a spatula or butter knife to create peaks in the meringue.
Turn the oven to broil after preheating.
Place the pie in the oven and broil until the top is golden brown, watching closely to prevent burning.
If one side browns faster than the other, do not put it back in to avoid burning the already browned side.
