🥗Healthier: zucchini

💰Cheaper: potatoes

Zucchini is lower in calories and potatoes are more budget-friendly.

1

Cut the ends off the green plantains and slice down along the curved part to peel them.

2

Cut the peeled plantains into about 1-inch pieces.

3

Heat about half an inch of vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium heat.

4

Fry the plantain rounds for about 5 minutes on each side until golden, checking occasionally with tongs.

5

Remove the fried plantains and place them in a bowl lined with paper towels.

6

Flatten each fried plantain round using a tostonera or a small round plastic plate.

7

Turn the heat back on to medium and fry the flattened plantains for about 2-3 minutes on each side until slightly golden.

8

Remove the tostones from the oil, sprinkle with salt (and garlic salt if desired), and serve hot.
