Strawberries and Cream

Cultural Context

Strawberries and cream is a classic American dessert, particularly popular during the summer months when strawberries are in season. This simple yet delightful dish celebrates the natural sweetness of ripe strawberries paired with rich, whipped cream. Traditionally served at picnics and gatherings, it has become a staple at events like Wimbledon, where it's famously enjoyed by spectators. Today, variations abound, with many opting for flavored creams or additional toppings, but the essence remains the same: a refreshing treat that embodies the joy of summer.

🥗Healthier: Greek yogurt

💰Cheaper: milk + cornstarch

Greek yogurt reduces calories while maintaining creaminess

1

Add 2 cups of rolled oats into a large mixing bowl.

2

Add 1/4 cup of corn flour to the bowl.

3

Take a handful of soft ripe strawberries, twist off any stalks, and place them into a separate container.

4

Using the back of a fork, mash the strawberries into a pulp to release the natural juices.

5

Add the strawberry pulp and juice to the dry ingredients and give everything a quick mix.

6

Open 1 tin of sweetened condensed milk and slowly start to add it to the mixture, aiming for a sticky dough texture.

7

Leave the mixture for 5 minutes before adding more condensed milk, as the oats will soak up a lot of the liquid.

8

Check if the mixture is damp to the touch; if not, continue adding more condensed milk.

9

Add a splash of red food coloring to the mixture.

10

Work the dough with your hands until it forms a firm paste; press your thumb into the dough to ensure it leaves an imprint.

11

Use the paste to pack around your carp rig.

12

Once the bait is firmly pressed on the lead, it will cast easily.

13

If the paste begins to dry out, add some water and remix until it becomes wet again.

14

To store the bait, place it into an airtight bag and refrigerate for up to 4 days.
