1 cup thinly sliced onions
1 cup fennel, chopped
1/4 cup olive oil
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp chili flakes
1/4 cup fresh herbs, chopped (such as parsley or basil)
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
1/2 cup white wine
1 cup bottled clam juice
1 can (28 oz) whole peeled tomatoes
1 lb mussels, cleaned
1 lb clams, cleaned
1 lb shrimp, peeled and deveined
1 lb crab legs
1/2 lb fish fillets (such as cod or halibut)
2 tablespoons butter
1/4 cup parsley, chopped (for garnish)
1 loaf crusty Italian bread

Heat olive oil in a pan.

Add thinly sliced onions and fennel, and sauté until soft.

Add garlic, chili flakes, and fresh herbs, and stir.

Stir in tomato paste, and season with salt and pepper.

Pour in white wine and bottled clam juice.

Add a can of whole peeled tomatoes and break them up with the back of a spoon.

Add mussels and clams first, then shrimp and crab, and finally the fish.

Simmer until the fish is just cooked through.

Stir in a few knobs of butter to enrich the broth.

Garnish with parsley if desired and serve with crusty Italian bread.
