yogurt starter culture

🥗Healthier: homemade yogurt

💰Cheaper: store-bought yogurt

Using homemade yogurt can be a cost-effective way to start.

1

Add milk into a pan and heat it until it begins to steam, but do not let it boil.

2

Turn off the heat once the milk is hot enough and allow it to cool slightly.

3

Test the milk temperature by placing it on your wrist; it should be warm but not too hot.

4

Divide the milk into two bowls for two different starters.

5

In one bowl, cut the lemon slightly and place it facing down in the milk, ensuring it is covered halfway.

6

In the second bowl, take a chili pepper with the stem intact and dip it into the milk, ensuring it is submerged.

7

Cover both bowls with cling film or a lid to prevent air from entering.

8

Store the bowls in a warm, dark place, such as a cupboard or wrapped in a napkin, for 16 to 24 hours to ferment.

9

After 18 to 24 hours, check the bowls for fermentation; the milk should have thickened and formed a gel-like consistency.

10

Remove the lemon and chili from the bowls and strain the mixture using a strainer or cheesecloth to separate the liquid from the starter culture.
