Mix 2 cups of all-purpose flour with yeast, 3/4 cup of sugar, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 1 teaspoon of ground cardamom.
Add 2 cups of warm milk, warmer than your hand but not hot, heated in the microwave.
Add 2 normal-sized eggs.
Add 1/2 cup of raisins (optional).
Gradually add a total of 4 cups of flour, mixing until it starts to look like dough.
Add 1/2 cup of softened butter and continue mixing until the dough is ready.
Knead the dough until it sticks less to your hands and starts to come out of the bowl.
Let the dough rise for 45 minutes to an hour until doubled in size.
Roll and shape the dough into four strips for braiding.
Braid the strips together and let rise again under a towel.
Prepare an egg wash with 2 egg yolks, water, and a little sugar.
Brush the dough with the egg wash and sprinkle with pearl sugar or almonds.
Bake in a preheated oven at 390°F for 10 to 20 minutes.
