1 teaspoon mustard seeds
1 inch finely chopped ginger
5-6 slit green chilies

2.5 glasses water
salt to taste
1-2 teaspoons sugar
4-5 tablespoons freshly grated coconut
finely chopped fresh coriander leaves

Rinse 1 cup of split green gram (moong dal) very well and strain out the water completely.

Keep the rinsed moong dal aside for at least half an hour to avoid stickiness.

Heat a pan and pour in 2-3 teaspoons of cooking oil.

Add 1 teaspoon of mustard seeds and allow them to splutter.

Add 1 inch of finely chopped ginger to the pan.

Add 5-6 slit green chilies and some curry leaves.

Add 2-3 pinches of asafoetida powder and stir well.

Pour in 2.5 glasses of water.

Add salt to taste and 1-2 teaspoons of sugar.

Add 4-5 tablespoons of freshly grated coconut and stir well.

Close the lid and cook for 2 minutes.

Open the lid and add the rinsed split green gram (moong dal).

Stir well and add some finely chopped fresh coriander leaves.

Squeeze half a lemon into the mixture and stir well.

Close the lid and cook for 10-12 minutes.

Switch off the flame when done.
