Garlic powder can be a convenient substitute.
Add 1 cup of warm water (about 110 degrees Fahrenheit) to a bowl.
Stir in 1.5 tablespoons of sugar and 2.25 teaspoons of active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until frothy.
In a separate bowl, combine 3.5 cups of bread flour, 0.5 teaspoons of baking powder, and 2 teaspoons of salt.
Mix the dry ingredients together using a stand mixer with a paddle attachment until well distributed.
Add 1 egg and 0.25 cup of yogurt to the dry ingredients.
Once the yeast mixture is frothy, add it to the dry ingredients and mix on medium speed until combined.
Switch to a dough hook and knead the dough on medium-low speed for 2-3 minutes until soft and smooth.
Shape the dough into a ball and place it in an oiled bowl, brushing oil on top to prevent drying.
Cover the bowl and let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1 hour until doubled in size.
Prepare garlic butter by melting butter on medium-low heat and adding 4 finely diced garlic cloves. Stir for 2-3 minutes until garlic is infused.
Add 1 tablespoon of finely chopped cilantro to the garlic butter and mix well. Set aside.
Once the dough has risen, punch it down and cut it into 8 pieces.
Roll each piece into a ball and cover with oiled plastic wrap to prevent sticking.
Drizzle oil on the work surface and flatten one dough ball on it.
Roll out the dough to your desired shape (round, oblong, or triangular) without using flour.
Preheat a cast iron skillet and place the rolled-out naan on it.
Cook until bubbles form on the surface, then flip and press down the edges to ensure even cooking.
Brush the cooked naan with the prepared garlic butter and repeat with remaining dough balls.
