Stromboli originated in the United States, inspired by Italian immigrants who brought their love of pizza. Named after the volcanic island of Stromboli, this dish reflects the Italian tradition of rolling meats and cheeses in dough. It's a popular party food and comfort meal, often filled with various meats, cheeses, and vegetables. Today, variations abound, with many regions adding their unique twists, making it a beloved dish across the globe.

In a mixing bowl, combine 3/4 cup of warm water, 1 tablespoon of sugar, 1 1/2 teaspoons of active or instant yeast, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt.
Add 1 3/4 cup of all purpose flour to the mixture and mix using a dough hook on medium speed until the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl and the edges look clean.
The dough should be soft and tacky, but not sticky to the hands. Transfer the dough to a lightly greased bowl, flip it to coat in grease, cover with a towel, and let it rise for 1 hour.
After the dough has risen, preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
Roll out the risen dough onto a piece of parchment paper into a large rectangle.
Spread a layer of pizza sauce on the dough, staying at least an inch away from the edges.
Layer the dough with a selection of Italian cold cuts including salami, pepperoni, and prosciutto.
Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese over the cold cuts.
Start rolling the dough from one edge, peeling it off the parchment paper gently to avoid pushing out the ingredients, and roll it up like a cinnamon roll.
Pinch the edges of the dough to seal it shut and roll it back to the center of the parchment paper.
Lift the stromboli onto a baking sheet, brush the top with beaten egg, and sprinkle with freshly grated or shredded Parmesan cheese and chopped parsley.
Cut small vents into the dough with a sharp knife.
Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
Slice and serve hot with additional pizza sauce for dipping.
