1

Wash and soak 1 cup of moong dal for about 30 minutes.

2

Chop 3 green chilies and 1 large tomato.

3

Add the soaked moong dal into a pressure cooker or suitable pan.

4

Add the chopped tomatoes and green chilies to the dal.

5

Add 1 teaspoon of cumin powder, 0.5 teaspoon of coriander powder, and a pinch (0.25 teaspoon) of turmeric to the mixture.

6

Add enough water to cover the ingredients in the pot.

7

Cook in the pressure cooker for about 3-4 whistles or cover and cook on an open flame until the dal is cooked (approximately 10-20 minutes).

8

Do not add salt while cooking the dal; add it after the dal is cooked.

9

Once the dal is cooked, add salt to taste and adjust the consistency with water if it's too thick.

10

In another pan, heat 2 tablespoons of oil until hot.

11

Add 0.5 teaspoon of mustard seeds to the hot oil and wait for them to start spluttering.

12

Add broken dry red chilies, smashed garlic, and a few curry leaves to the pan.

13

Sauté until the garlic is nicely browned and aromatic.

14

Pour the tempered mixture over the cooked dal.
