Apple Pie
Cultural Context
Apple pie is a quintessential American dessert, often associated with home and comfort. It has roots in European pie-making traditions but has evolved into a symbol of American culture, famously referred to as 'as American as apple pie.' It is commonly served during holidays like Thanksgiving and is enjoyed year-round.

Whole wheat flour adds fiber.
Add your flour and salt to a bowl and mix well.
Take your butter, cut it into small cubes and freeze it for 10 minutes.
Add your butter to your flour and start incorporating it with your fingers NOT YOUR PALMS. Go slow and break apart each piece carefully. Keep going until all the butter has been incorporated into the flour and no large butter pieces remain.
Add your water (make sure it's ice cold) and mix with your hands to form a rough dough.
Knead this in the bowl itself until a smooth non-sticky ball is formed.
Cover with foil and refrigerate for at least half an hour.
Peel, core, and slice your apples thinly.
Add your sugar, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt to the sliced apples and toss to combine.
Place your pan on high heat and melt your butter and then add your apples.
Cook them while stirring and mixing occasionally until they soften and reduce in volume. They should release a lot of their moisture at this point.
After the right texture is reached, kill the heat and let them cool in the pan for at least 15-30 minutes.
Preheat your oven to 180 c.
Take your pie dough from the fridge, unfoil it and divide into two pieces.
Flour your work surface and rolling pin and start rolling out one of the dough pieces.
Roll it out evenly and thinly and it should be about double the size of your pie dish (remember this has to go around the sides too).
When it's rolled out, place it over your pie dish and gently lower it in using the back of your hand to nudge the dough into the corners.
Press the sides with your fingers to create a strong seal and cut the excess from the edges using a knife.
Repeat the rolling process for the top.
Take your cool pie filling and transfer it into the crust-lined dish.
Place your pie top over it and smoothen and pinch the sides to create a seal. Cut the edges as before. You can use the leftover dough from both steps to create decorative elements to add on the top if you want.
Cut into the top with a knife in 2 or 3 places to let steam escape the pie and brush with a beaten egg.
Place into the center of your oven and cook for around 45-50 minutes.
Let it rest after baking for at least 2 hours and then cut a slice and enjoy!
