Bulgogi

Cultural Context

Bulgogi, meaning 'fire meat' in Korean, has roots dating back to the Goguryeo era (37 BC - 668 AD). Traditionally enjoyed during celebrations, this dish symbolizes hospitality and warmth. Today, bulgogi is a beloved staple in Korean cuisine, often grilled or stir-fried, and has gained popularity worldwide, inspiring various adaptations.

KRKRmain
4 servings
Servings4
1 1/2 lbs. steak (NY strip or sirloin preferred)
1/3 cup soy sauce
2 1/2 tbsp brown sugar
2 tbsp sesame oil
1 tbsp grated ginger
3 garlic cloves minced
1 bunch chopped green onions (for garnish)
Jasmine Rice
1-2 tbsp vegetable oil
1

In a bowl, combine soy sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, ginger, and garlic. Mix well and set aside.

2

Cut the steak into 1/16" strips and place in the marinade (a ziplock bag works best, but a bowl will do, just ensure all of the steak is covered in the marinade).

3

Place in refrigerator for at least an hour.

4

Bring the griddle to medium/low heat. Once to temperature, lay the oil on the griddle, and the beef in the oil.

5

Cook on the first side for approximately one minute to create a sear. Flip the beef and cook an additional minute.

6

Pull the beef and serve over jasmine rice and with your favorite Korean sides.
