Bulgogi

Cultural Context

Bulgogi, meaning 'fire meat' in Korean, has roots dating back to the Goguryeo era (37 BC - 668 AD). Traditionally enjoyed during celebrations, this dish symbolizes hospitality and warmth. Today, bulgogi is a beloved staple in Korean cuisine, often grilled or stir-fried, and has gained popularity worldwide, inspiring various adaptations.

KRKRmain
4 servings
Servings4
0.75 lb thinly sliced ribeye beef
1 teaspoon beef bouillon powder
3 cloves fresh garlic
2 tablespoons sugar
1/4 cup soy sauce
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup hot water
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 cups Korean rice
1 head lettuce
2 tablespoons samjang
1/2 cup pomuchim

Quantities are estimated based on standard recipes for your convenience. The actual ingredients used in this video are accurate.

1

Prepare thinly sliced ribeye beef, about a little bit under a pound.

2

If you can't find thinly sliced beef, freeze a block of beef for 20-30 minutes, then slice it thinly using a serrated knife or any sharp knife.

3

Gather all ingredients before starting to cook, as the cooking time will be less than a few minutes.

4

Preheat a heavy bottom frying pan on high heat.

5

Hand tear the beef into smaller pieces while the pan is heating up.

6

Once the beef is about two-thirds cooked, add fresh garlic, sugar, soy sauce, and beef bouillon powder (if using) to the pan.

7

Let the mixture simmer for about one minute.

8

Taste the bulgogi and adjust seasoning: add more salt if it's not salty enough or hot water if it's too salty. Adjust sweetness with more brown sugar if desired.

9

Serve the bulgogi with warm Korean rice and prepare lettuce wraps with the bulgogi, rice, samjang, and pomuchim.
