Homemade Soft Pretzels

1 tablespoon active dry yeast
1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon sugar
vegetable oil
coarse sea salt or pretzel salt

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees.

In a bowl, combine 1.5 cups of warm water with 1 tablespoon of salt and stir until dissolved.

Add 1 tablespoon of sugar to the warm water and stir until dissolved.

Open a packet of active dry yeast and pour it into the warm water mixture, stirring gently.

Let the yeast mixture sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes bubbly and active.

Measure out 4.5 cups of all-purpose flour, leveling it off as you go.

Pour the yeast mixture into the bowl with the flour slowly to avoid splatter.

Add 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil on top of the flour mixture.

Use a handheld mixer, stand mixer, or a spoon to combine the ingredients until a dough forms, without kneading.

Gather any dry flour from the sides of the bowl with clean hands and form the dough into a ball.

Oil a large bowl with a tablespoon of vegetable oil, ensuring it’s well coated on the bottom and sides.

Place the dough ball in the oiled bowl, cover with a tea towel, and let it rest for 45 minutes to an hour until it rises.
