Banana Bread

Cultural Context

Banana bread is a popular quick bread that originated in the United States during the Great Depression. It became a staple in American households due to its simplicity and the ability to use overripe bananas that might otherwise go to waste. Today, it is enjoyed as a snack or dessert and can be found in various adaptations, including nut and chocolate chip variations.

1

Heat your oven to 180 degrees Celsius (400 degrees Fahrenheit).

2

In a medium bowl, add 560 grams of very ripe bananas and mash them with a fork until they're broken up.

3

Add 400 grams of sweetened condensed milk to the mashed bananas and mix with a whisk until pretty homogeneous, little chunks of banana are okay.

4

Add 240 grams of self-rising flour and fold it into the batter.

5

Grab a 23 by 10 centimeters (9 by 4 inches) pan and prepare it with butter or baking spray.

6

Add the batter to the prepared pan.

7

(Optional) Before mixing in the flour, add 2 thirds of a cup of walnuts to the batter and a handful of chocolate chips.

8

(Optional) After putting the batter in the pan, sprinkle the rest of the walnuts on top and a pinch of sugar for crunch.

9

Put the pan in the oven and bake for 55 to 65 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.

10

After 55 minutes, check if it needs more time; if so, add an additional 5 minutes.

11

Take it out of the oven and put it on a wire rack.

12

Serve immediately or let it cool; it stays good for a few days if kept in a Ziploc bag or wrapped in aluminum foil, or you can freeze it for at least three months.
