Honduran tamales are a cherished dish, often prepared for special occasions and family gatherings. Traditionally made with masa and filled with meats and vegetables, they are wrapped in banana leaves and steamed to perfection. This dish reflects the rich culinary heritage of Honduras, showcasing local ingredients and flavors. In modern times, variations have emerged, with different fillings and cooking methods, making tamales a versatile favorite across Central America.

Prepare banana leaves by cutting them into rectangles and softening them by passing over an open flame.
Mix masa harina with chicken broth until a dough forms, adjusting consistency as needed.
In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat and sauté onion, garlic, and bell pepper until soft.
Add chicken and pork to the skillet, cooking until browned and fully cooked, about 10-15 minutes.
Stir in cumin, salt, black pepper, bay leaves, and chopped tomatoes, cooking for another 5 minutes.
Remove from heat and mix in chopped cilantro and lime juice for freshness.
Spread a layer of masa dough onto a banana leaf, leaving space at the edges.
Place a spoonful of the meat and vegetable mixture in the center of the masa layer.
Fold the banana leaf over the filling to create a package, securing it with kitchen twine or tying with strips of the leaf.
Repeat with remaining ingredients until all tamales are assembled.
Place tamales upright in a steamer pot, adding water to the bottom without submerging the tamales.
Cover and steam for about 1-1.5 hours, checking water levels occasionally.
