Fritule are traditional Croatian doughnuts often enjoyed during festive seasons, especially around Christmas and New Year's. These sweet treats are a beloved part of Croatian culinary heritage, showcasing the influence of Mediterranean and Central European flavors. Today, fritule are enjoyed in various forms across Croatia and beyond, often featuring different flavorings and fillings.
Add 4 cups of flour, 2 eggs, 1 tablespoon of olive oil, 1 tablespoon of rum, 1/2 tablespoon of instant yeast, and 1 packet of vanilla sugar into a bowl.
Mix all the ingredients together until combined, then add in the yeast.
Knead the dough until it comes together into a ball, it will be sticky.
Cover the dough with a dish towel and let it rise until doubled in size.
Heat beef tallow in a pot for frying.
Once the dough has risen, use two small spoons to form small balls of dough.
Carefully drop the dough balls into the hot tallow, ensuring they bubble up immediately to indicate the right temperature.
Fry until golden brown, turning to ensure all sides are cooked evenly.
Remove the fritule from the oil and let them drain on a plate.
