Fritule are traditional Croatian doughnuts often enjoyed during festive seasons, especially around Christmas and New Year's. These sweet treats are a beloved part of Croatian culinary heritage, showcasing the influence of Mediterranean and Central European flavors. Today, fritule are enjoyed in various forms across Croatia and beyond, often featuring different flavorings and fillings.
Whisk dry yeast into milk and add half the flour. Let rise for 10–20 minutes.
Add remaining flour, brown sugar, orange zest, egg, rum, and salt. Mix until thick and fluffy.
Heat the oil in a deep pot, then gently spoon batter into the hot oil.
Fry until the fritule (fritters) are golden brown on all sides.
Dust with powdered sugar or top with Nutella, jam, or honey.
