Belizean Meat Pies

Belizean meat pies, also known as empanadas or patties, are a beloved street food that reflects the diverse culinary influences of Belize. Traditionally filled with spiced meat and vegetables, they are often enjoyed as a snack or quick meal. These pies are a staple at celebrations and gatherings, showcasing the country's vibrant flavors. Today, variations can be found across Central America and beyond, appealing to a wide audience with their comforting taste and portable nature.

Start by browning the ground beef in a hot skillet until all redness is gone.
Add white onions, green onions, and bell pepper to the skillet and stir.
Season with seasoned salt, black pepper, garlic powder, oregano, and complete seasoning to taste.
Add approximately 4 cups of water to the meat mixture.
Mix in 1 tablespoon of cornstarch dissolved in cold water to thicken the sauce.
Add a habenero pepper to the meat sauce.
Set the meat sauce aside once done.
In a mixing bowl, combine 4 cups of flour, 2 tablespoons of sugar, 1 and 1/2 teaspoons of salt, and 2 tablespoons of baking powder.
Add 1 cup of butter shortening and 1/3 cup of butter to the flour mixture and mix.
Slowly add 1 and 1/4 cups of ice cold water until the dough forms.
Knead the dough on a floured surface and separate into two pieces.
Wrap the dough in Saran Wrap and refrigerate for approximately 30 minutes.
Grease the muffin pans with shortening.
Roll out the dough and cut into circles to fit the muffin pans.
Place the dough circles in the muffin pans and fill with meat sauce.
Top with a smaller dough circle, seal edges with water, and prick with a fork.
Bake in a 375°F oven for approximately 40 minutes.
