Homemade Cinnamon Rolls

Cultural Context

Cinnamon rolls are a beloved treat in American cuisine, often enjoyed for breakfast or as a dessert. They are especially popular during holidays and family gatherings, where their warm, sweet aroma fills the home. The dish has roots in Scandinavian baking traditions, where similar sweet rolls are made, but the American version has become a staple in many households, often served with cream cheese frosting or icing.

1

Mix together 1 box cake mix, 2 and 1/2 cups flour, and 1 small package of instant yeast in a bowl.

2

Add 1/4 cup melted butter, 1 cup warm milk, and 1 egg to the dry ingredients and mix.

3

Knead the dough for about 3 to 4 minutes until well combined.

4

In another bowl, mix together 1 stick of room temperature or slightly melted butter, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1 tbsp cinnamon, and a little salt.

5

Flour the counter and roll out the dough into a rectangle shape.

6

Spread the butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon mixture evenly over the rolled-out dough.

7

Roll the dough tightly into a log shape.

8

Cut the edges off the log that have no filling, then slice the log into equal pieces.

9

Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with butter and place the cinnamon rolls inside.

10

Cover the dish with a kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let it sit for 20 to 30 minutes to rise.

11

After rising for about 40 minutes, spread some remaining cinnamon butter mixture on top of each roll.

12

Preheat the oven to 350°F and bake the rolls for 18 to 20 minutes.

13

In a bowl, mix 1 cup powdered sugar with about 1 tbsp milk and 1/2 tsp vanilla extract to create a glaze.

14

Adjust the consistency of the glaze by adding more milk if necessary until it reaches the desired thickness.

15

Drizzle the glaze over the baked cinnamon rolls.
