Homemade Cinnamon Rolls

Cultural Context

Cinnamon rolls are a beloved treat in American cuisine, often enjoyed for breakfast or as a dessert. They are especially popular during holidays and family gatherings, where their warm, sweet aroma fills the home. The dish has roots in Scandinavian baking traditions, where similar sweet rolls are made, but the American version has become a staple in many households, often served with cream cheese frosting or icing.

1

Grease 2 9 by 13-inch baking pans and set aside.

2

Pour 1 cup of milk into a medium saucepan and heat until small bubbles appear; do not boil.

3

Remove from heat and add 1/2 cup of softened butter, stirring until melted.

4

Stir in 1 cup of tepid water and let cool to lukewarm.

5

In a large bowl, add 1 tbsp of active dry yeast, 1 cup of sugar, 1 tsp of salt, 2 large eggs, and 2 cups of all-purpose flour.

6

Pour in the lukewarm milk mixture and stir until well blended.

7

Add 4 more cups of flour, about half a cup at a time, stirring to blend after each addition until the dough pulls together.

8

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8 minutes until smooth and elastic.

9

Divide the dough into two equal pieces and roll each into a 12 by 9-inch rectangle.

10

In a medium bowl, mix 2 cups of dark brown sugar with 2 tsp of ground cinnamon.

11

Spread 1/4 cup of softened butter over each piece of rolled dough and sprinkle with half of the cinnamon sugar mixture.

12

Roll each piece of dough into a cylinder, sealing the seam with water.

13

Cut each log into 12 equal pieces about 1 inch thick and arrange in the prepared baking pans.

14

Cover with plastic wrap and let rise until doubled in volume, about 1 hour, or refrigerate overnight.

15

Preheat the oven to 375°F and bake for 20 to 25 minutes until golden brown.

16

For the icing, mix 2 cups of confectioner sugar, 3 oz of softened cream cheese, 1 tbsp of softened butter, and 1/2 tsp of vanilla extract, adding 3 tbsp of milk until reaching spreading consistency.

17

Spread icing over warm rolls before serving.
