In a bowl, combine 1/3 cup mayonnaise, 1 tablespoon ketchup, 2 teaspoons minced onion, and 2 teaspoons sweet relish to make the sauce. Mix well and set aside to develop flavors.
Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a skillet over medium-low heat until browned.
Add sliced onions to the skillet and sauté for 12-15 minutes until golden brown and caramelized, stirring occasionally.
Form 3-4 ounces of ground chuck into oval-shaped patties, ensuring they are not too thick.
Cook the patties in the skillet for about 1.5 to 2 minutes on each side until done, adjusting time based on pan heat.
Butter one side of seedless rye bread generously and place it butter-side down in the skillet.
Spread a dollop of the prepared sauce on the bread in the skillet.
Place a slice of Swiss cheese on top of the sauce.
Add the cooked patty on top of the cheese, then add more sauce on the other slice of buttered rye bread.
Top with another slice of Swiss cheese and a generous amount of caramelized onions.
Cover with the second slice of bread, butter-side up, and cook on medium-low heat until the bread is golden brown and the cheese melts, flipping carefully to brown the other side.
Once browned, remove from the skillet, slice in half, and serve with fries, potato chips, or pickles.
