Fat cakes, also known as magwinya or vetkoek, are a beloved snack in Botswana and other Southern African countries. Traditionally enjoyed during gatherings or as street food, these deep-fried dough balls are cherished for their soft, fluffy texture and versatility. They can be served plain or with sweet or savory fillings, making them a popular choice for any occasion. Today, variations can be found globally, reflecting local tastes and ingredients.

Honey offers natural sweetness while brown sugar is often less expensive.
Mix 250 grams of sugar, 1 tablespoon of salt, and 700 milliliters of warm water until the sugar dissolves.
Add 2.5 teaspoons of dry yeast to the mixture and let it sit.
In a large bowl, combine the yeast mixture with 1 kilo of flour and mix until a dough forms.
Let the dough rise next to a heater for 45 to 60 minutes.
After the dough has risen, heat 1 liter of cooking oil in a deep pan over medium heat.
Fry the dough balls until golden brown on both sides.
