Often associated with camping or outdoor cooking, it embodies the spirit of resourcefulness and simplicity. Today, it remains a favorite for family dinners, adaptable to various tastes and dietary preferences.

Scrub 4 to 6 medium russet potatoes, leaving the skins on.
Slice the potatoes into 1/4 inch circles using a mandolin or knife.
Prepare a large bowl of water to soak the sliced potatoes.
In a medium skillet over medium-high heat, add 1 tablespoon of cooking oil.
Sauté 1 diced yellow onion in the skillet until softened and slightly colored, seasoning with salt and black pepper.
Add 1 pound of ground beef to the skillet, breaking it up as it cooks until browned.
Drain any excess grease from the skillet.
Stir in 2 teaspoons of minced garlic, 1 teaspoon of Italian seasoning, 1/2 teaspoon of smoked paprika, 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt into the beef mixture, then turn off the heat.
Spray a 9x13 baking dish with cooking oil.
Layer the sliced potatoes on the bottom of the baking dish.
Add one-third of the meat mixture on top of the potatoes, followed by one-third of the shredded cheese.
Repeat the layering process with more potatoes, half of the remaining meat mixture, and half of the remaining cheese.
Top with the last layer of potatoes and the remaining meat mixture.
In a bowl, mix together 1/2 cup of beef broth and 1/4 cup of milk, then pour it over the layered dish.
Cover the baking dish with foil and bake in a preheated oven at 375°F.
After baking, remove the foil and sprinkle Parmesan cheese on top, then return to the oven for another 10-15 minutes until the cheese is melted and golden brown.
Let the dish rest for 5 minutes before garnishing with parsley and serving.
