Originating from the coastal regions of Mozambique, Pao is a staple bread often enjoyed with meals or as a snack. This bread reflects the country's Portuguese influences, characterized by its soft texture and slightly sweet flavor. Traditionally, it is served with stews or grilled meats, making it a beloved part of Mozambican cuisine. Today, Pao has found its way into various global kitchens, often adapted with local ingredients and flavors.

Mix flour, sugar, and salt in a large bowl.
Dissolve yeast in warm water and let sit until frothy, about 5 minutes.
Add yeast mixture, milk, and oil to the flour mixture.
Knead the dough on a floured surface until smooth, about 10 minutes.
Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled, about 1 hour.
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
Punch down the risen dough and shape it into a loaf.
Place the shaped dough in a greased baking pan.
Cover and let rise again until doubled, about 30 minutes.
Bake in preheated oven until golden brown, about 25-30 minutes.
Remove from oven and let cool on a wire rack.
