Cream together 3/4 cups of butter and 1/2 cup of packed brown sugar until fluffy.
Add 3 tablespoons of arrowroot to the butter and sugar mixture.
Incorporate orange zest and 2 cups of chopped mixed dried fruit into the mixture.
Add 1/2 cup of maraschino cherries with juice and 2 teaspoons of mixed peels, finely chopped.
Mix in spices: allspice, ginger powder, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, and salt, along with baking powder.
Gradually fold in all-purpose flour, mixing gently to avoid overmixing.
Add browning and malta to the mixture and combine until smooth.
Pour the batter into an 8-inch pan and smooth the top.
Bake at 350°F for about 1 hour and 25 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
