Mongolian Beef

Cultural Context

Mongolian Beef, despite its name, is a dish popularized in American Chinese cuisine rather than originating from Mongolia. It features tender beef stir-fried with a sweet and savory sauce, often enjoyed in restaurants. The dish reflects the adaptability of Asian flavors in Western cooking, with variations found in many Chinese restaurants across the globe.

Servings4
1.5 lbs flank steak
4 cloves garlic
1/2 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup hoisin sauce
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1 tablespoon ginger
1 cup broth
1 medium onion
2 tablespoons starch
1/4 cup dry cooking sherry
2 cups mixed veggies

1

Slice the steak into small thin strips across the grain for more tender results.

2

Place the beef in a large resealable bag, add the starch, and toss to coat. Refrigerate the meat for at least 15 minutes.

3

Combine the soy sauce, beef broth, dry sherry, hoisin sauce, brown sugar, garlic, ginger, salt and pepper in a small bowl and mix together.

4

Add the meat with any excess starch to the slow cooker and pour the soy mixture over the sliced beef. Stir everything together until all the ingredients are well coated in the sauce. Cook until the beef is almost fully cooked.

5

Add the vegetables to the pot in the last 30 minutes to an hour of cooking. Stir them into the cooked beef until well mixed.
